Safety Glass Experts: cylindrical bending and tempering – an expert’s review

This article gives us an expert’s idea and advice on the production of bent tempered glass production and cylindrical bending systems. We find out about the challenges that today’s glassmakers have to face with regards to quality demands, as well the natural limitations of the processes involved.

Evolution of the process
Bent tempered glass production has evolved considerably from vertical tempering furnaces of the past, and cylindrical bending systems have established a strong foothold in the glass industry. In theory, cylindrical bent tempered glass is a relatively simple product in the tempered glass range. It is curved to constant radius on quenching rollers without the use of a quench ring. Prior to the quenching section, the heating process of bent tempered glass is identical to flat tempered glass.
However, since customers demand very high quality products, even this theoretically simple product requires considerable effort by manufacturers.
The strength of Constant Radius Bending and tempering systems (CRB) lies in the zero tooling and easy control method of curving the glass.
When operating in a safe frame of easy products and materials, a cylindrical bender will perform at very low maintenance cost, producing very constant quality. This is undoubtedly the strongest feature of CRB plants. Curved tempered glass is priced higher than traditional flat architectural glass and therefore CRB plants can be a good investment in a glass plant.
There are many different designs of bending units available on the market and maybe the hardest part for plant managers dealing with these machines is to choose the right one for their needs.
