HyGear: sustainable growth for float glass lines

2015-02-20 | Specialist applications

Experienced in the development of turnkey gas processing systems, Hygear is now developing a Gas Recovery System (Hy.REC) to recover the hydrogen and nitrogen from the tin bath of the float glass lines. In this article, the company explains how this system works, and shows the benefits that float glass manufacturers can have, especially with regards to return on investment.

HyGear’s Hydrogen Generation Systems
HyGear, specialized in the development of turnkey gas processing, offers on-site hydrogen generation systems for the glass industry. These systems are installed on-site, thus saving costs and reducing emissions by overcoming the necessity of hydrogen supply with tube trailers. To reduce costs even further, HyGear is developing a Gas Recovery System (Hy.REC) to recover the hydrogen and nitrogen from the tin baths of float glass lines.
The opportunities lie in the reduction of operational utility costs (hydrogen and nitrogen). Therefore, the system fits well within the glass industry’s aim of energy and cost savings.

GAS MIXTURE
Flat glass is produced by pouring molten glass on a bed of molten tin. The hydrogen-nitrogen gas mixture forms the reductive atmosphere over the bed of molten tin to prevent oxidisation. Depending on the float line settings, between 3-10 per cent of the gas mixture is hydrogen. The rest, and thus the majority, is nitrogen. Significant amounts of this mixture, in combination with pollutants such as hydrogen sulphide, tin sulphide and tin oxide, are left at the exit of the tin bath and are currently vented or left unutilised. By feeding the polluted gas mixture into the Hy.REC, a significant amount of the hydrogen and nitrogen mixture can be purified and reused.

CONVENTIONAL TECHNOLOGIES
There are already several gas recycling solutions. Conventional solutions contain multiple filtering steps, first filtering main contaminants and later on removing h...
