TIAMA - msc & sgcc: GIA - when gob weight monitoring opens the way towards glass container weight decrease

2014-06-20 | Machinery developments

Continuously working to strengthen its position in the hot end of glass plants, TIAMA - msc & sgcc has, also thanks to its acquisition of Gedevelop, an important key product – the GIA – Gob Image Analyser. This article gives us an idea of what this analyser can do, also in terms of production cost savings for glassmakers worldwide.

TIAMA - msc & sgcc: GIA - when gob weight monitoring opens the way towards glass container weight decrease
A t the beginning of this year, TIAMA firmly fortified its position in the hot-end area of glass plants. The company acquired the glass container activity of the Swedish expert Gedevelop, now “TIAMA Sweden”. Thanks to this strategic move, a key product, the GIA – Gob Image Analyser, is now fully part of the TIAMA product range. This monitoring system is already operational all over the world with 350 units installed on IS machines in all major glass groups such as O-I, Verallia, Consol, Vidrala, and more… GIA enables glass plants to take immediate actions to improve gob properties and prevent future problems.

The GIA concept
The principle of the GIA function is based on a line scanning camera placed underneath the level of the shear cut. GIA provides strategic data on gob’s shape, weight, temperature, drop consistency, swing pattern, length, and diameter. All these data are precious for a complete follow-up of gob properties. The operating staff is able to monitor the behaviour of the gob throughout the entire forming process. Production problems can be analyzed at the earliest stage, hot-end operators can make adjustments immediately, thus anticipating and preventing any production drifts.
Keeping this data under control, glassmakers reduce gob tolerance to the minimum, therefore minimizing their costs and maximizing quality. Numbers speak for themselves: GIA payback time is guaranteed at less than 12 months.
In addition, GIA is a totally non-intrusive, optical measure...
