Glaston: taking the right steps at the right time – with the right people

Glaston, a provider of machinery, software and services for the glass processing industry in architectural, solar, automotive and appliance sectors – quite a long description! But not as long as Arto Metsänen would like it to be, as our readers will see in this article. Speaking to Mr. Metsänen, we find out about the company and group’s origins, ongoing developments and those for the future, with the aim of not only providing mere machines, but also guaranteeing quality and production levels too.

Kyro Corporation (from 2007, Glaston Corporation) was founded by a number of businessmen in 1870, first as a cotton, pulp and windmill business. The company moved on to enter the paper, cardboard and forest industry, and started in the glass industry in 1981,when it acquired the entire share stock of Tamglass Oy, Finland. In 2003, Kyro acquired the Italian company Z. Bavelloni and its distribution company Glasto.
Glaston Technologies, consisting of Tamglass and Bavelloni, therefore became the world’s largest comprehensive supplier of glass processing machines and services. The acquisition of German software company Albat+Wirsam was completed in 2007.
Z. Bavelloni (Glaston Italy Spa as of 2007) was founded in 1946 for the manufacture of diamond tools. The product range was later enlarged to include glass processing machinery, including cutting, edging bevelling, drilling and CNC machines.
Tamglass (Glaston Finland Oy as of 2007) was founded in 1970. The company’s main business idea was to launch project export to windshield factory machines. In response to customer demands, the company started to commercialize machinery for the production of laminated windshields and, starting from the 1980s, also flat tempering and bending and tempering machinery, based on its own technology and innovations.
