PSR: gathering bays benefit from System 500 technology

2013-12-20 | Ball Gathering

Although we have now supplied in excess of 500 forehearth and distributor systems around the world, the majority of them have been to the glass container or tableware industries in which the forming machines are supplied by gob feeders. Not long ago an opportunity arose to design and supply a complete system comprising distributor, forehearths and gathering bays for use with robot ball gathering machines.

PSR: gathering bays benefit from System 500 technology
It was four years ago that PSR was originally approached by a client to see whether we would be interested in applying our forehearth and distributor technology to its conventional working ends used for the low volume manufacture of glass products by robot gathering machines. The client operated furnaces with traditional rectangular working-ends with a number of gathering holes located at strategic positions for the robots. These working-ends were simple in terms of their operation, and relatively inexpensive to construct. In exactly the same way as it used to be in the mainstream glass container industry however, this type of design suffered from a lack of flexibility and glass temperature control between individual gathering positions.

First time for complete system
Although we had supplied forehearth and gathering bay refractories, stirrer systems and combustion systems to the crystal glass industry in the past, this was the first opportunity to provide a complete system. Each gathering bay, forehearth and distributor section was configured as a separate temperature and combustion control zone enabling the gathering bays to have much greater control flexibility and temperature autonomy than was possible with the previous traditional working-end. The system allowed each gathering bay to be operated at different throughputs and with different temperatures so as to optimize the forming conditions required for the different articles being manufactured. Interactions between...
