Glass forming: from molten glass to glassware

2012-03-13 | Other news

In this special part of the magazine – called Focus On – we will be speaking about forming, and, therefore, a part of the hot end of the glassworks, where the molten glass is formed into glass products, beginning when molten glass leaves the furnace and goes into the machines used to produce the final items.

There are an incredible number of different types of glass items manufactured today, ranging from the most obvious jars and bottles, to tableware and ovenware, lighting for homes and for the automotive sector, pharmaceutical glass – tubing for vials and ampoules – as well as cartridges for syringes, technical and laboratory glass, cosmetics and perfumery, glass blocks, quartz glass products and lenses for spectacles, and, last but not least, glass fibers. And all these products require a series of equipment and machinery that are manufactured respecting the highest specifics, using both complex production methods and high-quality metals.

Everyday glassware and glass items are made in glass container factories, which generally have three main parts: the batch house, the hot end, and the cold end. The batch house handles the raw materials; the hot end handles the manufacture – furnaces, annealing ovens, and forming machines; and the cold end handles product-inspection and packaging equipment.

After the furnace - IS machines
Nowadays, we speak about IS (individual section) machines. These machines can have up to 20 identical sections, each of which contains one complete set of mechanisms to make containers. In the case of multiple gobs, the shears cut the gobs simultaneously, and they fall into the blank moulds in parallel.
